  • Excerpt: I can see why this is a favoured rum on forums and chat rooms around the internet. It is dark and rich and carries a full round flavour profile compared to other rums in its price range. It also has a soft oily tobacco richness. It is right at home in the taverns where the stories are tall and the air is thick. There are times when I really enjoy that particular style of ambiance and atmosphere. The next time I am in that mood, this might be the rum I sip.

  • Excerpt: For kicks I compared this rum to the Italian-bought version of the same spirit (though the bottle has changed a bit) I reviewed in 2010. Very similar, indicating nothing major has changed at Havana Club in the last few years, though I get a bit more cocoa on the palate in the current bottling than the older one.

  • Excerpt: The Havana Club 7 is a good rum, well crafted, it doesn’t seem to have been messed with – it’s authentic Cuban rum. Unfortunately there is just something in its profile that I just don’t like. In the style I would go for Matusalem 15 or Bermudez Aniversario first but that is purely my preference. I must score it as I find it though. There is no point fudging my results by judging rum’s on how well made or “authentic” they are. I’m certainly not going to change my opinion to satisfy other people’s viewpoints.

  • Excerpt: Thin overall and very sweet, but not terrible. This is more enjoyable than the US counterpart.

  • Intro:

This is a rum distilled and bottled in Cuba. Currently embargoed by the United States, Cuban rum is only available from international retailers.

  • Nose:

Sweet almond, toffee, caramel and root beer barrel candies. Honey, toasted nuts and sweet syrupy molasses. Overall, very sweet, but no heat and no astringency.

  • Taste:

Thin mouth feel, still no heat. Sweet toffee, pecans, caramel and more syrupy sweetness. The continuation of the sugar-y root beer candy is interesting. Overall, no astringency, very little oak body. Not bitter.

  • Finish:

Short, loaded wtih cocoa, toffee and caramel. No heat.

  • Overall:

Thin overall and very sweet, but not terrible. This is more enjoyable than the US counterpart.
